The Basics of a Gyroscope

At its most basic level, a gyroscope consists of a wheel mounted on an axle that spins freely. This wheel has three axes (X, Y, and Z) at right angles, allowing it to spin in any direction. The wheel is mounted so that when spun on one axis (the primary axis), the other two axes remain perpendicular to each other and point in the same direction relative to the Earth's surface.

This rotation is called precession. When you spin the wheel on one axis, it will point in that direction no matter how you move it or the angle you tilt it.

How Gyroscopes Work

Gyroscopes take advantage of Newton's first law—an object in motion tends to remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. In this case, when you spin the wheel on its primary axis, inertia keeps it spinning at a constant speed, even if you tilt it or rotate it to another axis. This allows for navigation and measurement of orientations even when outside forces act upon them. Even though gravity affects the axle slightly due to its weight, this effect is minimal compared to the inertia from spinning on its primary axis, which keeps it from deviating from its path significantly enough for us to feel or measure easily.
